I never wanted to be a manager. I never wanted to be a writer. A craft I enjoy doing has been taken away from me, I should be allowed to mourn, I don’t care that I can do something else since I never liked doing it in the first place. I enjoyed solving problems and writing code, I don’t care if people say “well thats never what programming was about, it was actually about becoming a manager all along” I never wanted to be a manager, I never wanted to manage, I never wanted to be a proof reader.
Flashback to a debate I had with my supervisor March this year on the potential harms of being overly reliant on AI. And mind you, all I had was the amateur Chatgpt, a chatbot that I only knew to feed text, and numbers; no apps integrated. It wasn’t even fully approved by security, but my teammates were all-in already.
Used up my tokens. Alright, time to get off, I’d hear them joke about.
I knew once I gave in, I’d lose the patience to (ever) learn Excel/SQL, to analyze complex instructions, to be genuine in emails, and worse, to think for myself. Offloading my brains to a technology I knew nothing about, and envision it’ll optimize work, and then what, replace my job completely??
At the time, my supervisor tried selling me on the idea of “managing agents. That I’d no longer be doing the heavy lifting, the mundane repetitive tasks, but supervising a army of little me’s.
How cool would that be!
It wasn’t appealing at all. I terrified of keeping a consciousness.
